In 1945 the United States bombed Nagasaki and Hiroshima in retaliation to Pearl Harbor. Imagine it. Right before nuclear bombs had made their name in the world, people in Japan were strolling about in the cities, not knowing that in the next moment their city would be destroyed, along with all those innocent people.
Those who were not killed during the attack were killed off by the horrific side effects of the bomb, such as flash burns or radiation sickness.
The effects of the nuclear bombs forever changed Japan and the world; it created a fear among the people.
Though this may have affected the end of WWII, I don't think it was worth it. So many lives were lost, and the US created a deadly weapon - one that instilled fear of threat in the future.
