Iwo Jima

Iwo Jima was the first push by the United States in its Japanese campaign in World War II. Iwo Jima is significant because it shows the spirit and vitality of the United States. After the attack at Pearl Harbor, the U.S. was thrown into WWII and forever changed the way that wars were fought. America would eventually go on to set off the first atomic bombs at Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The picture is a constant reminder to all nations of how World War II forever changed the history of the world.

The soldiers in this picture will forever be honored in the minds of the United States citizens. The photograph was reproduced as a sculpture for the U.S. Marine Memorial outside Arlington National Cemetary. They marched all the way up a hill, expecting ambush from the Japanese the entire time, and raised the U.S. flag, the first American flag to be raised on Japanese soil.
