Challenger Disaster

This is a photograph of the tragic 1986 Challenger disaster, in which seven men and women died in the disintegration of their space shuttle.

This event caused some psychological stir in America. Questions arose about how dangerous the field of space exploration was, or whether it was even worth it to put lives at stake for such a thing. The way I see it, though, is that this event, horrible nonetheless, can be looked at with the glass half-full. This photograph can show the steps we've taken since the mid 1980's, the improvements we've made in the space exploration industry. America watched the disaster, and instead of seeing it as a total loss, it saw it as an opportunity, a chance to see our mistakes and capitalize on them.
