The song by Edwin Starr written as an anti-Vietnam War protest says that war is good for absolutely nothing. The song continues saying “War, I despise because it means destruction of innocent lives. War means tears to thousands of mothers’ eyes when their sons go to fight and lose their lives.” I personally agree with this because I think countless lives are wasted when at war. It doesn’t matter to me that some people are willing to give up their lives for a cause they believe in because there are people who care for them and to lose someone is indescribably devastating.
But, I know mentally that there are times when war is necessary. Granted, I believe it should be the last alternative, but there are times when people must fight against injustice. It’s not okay to leave your own people unprotected and open to getting attacked, nor is it okay to sit and watch while others are stripped of their rights. The reason people go to war is because of our differences, whether it may be beliefs, race, or culture in general. To me, the only way to prevent war is if we are all the same who believe in the same things and can have no dissent since there’s nothing to disagree on. But this is neither impossible nor remotely good for society.
