On October 9th, 2009 a centaur rocket was sent crashing into the moon's pole in an effort to determine if there was water on the moon. The impact of the rocket sent plumes of debris into space that was analyzed. Now NASA knows that there is water on the moon.
This event is generally overlooked; however, it is in fact a major positive event. This event opens up plenty of possibilities in regards to space exploration or establishing some form of lunar base with such sci-fi possibilities being of particular interest to me. Mankind could start a galactic empire thus escaping from a planet threatened by pollution. Or it could lead to some new form of space race where the goal is colonization rather than simply exploration. It all starts with making a base on the moon and the ready supply of water that NASA discover on October 9th may make our trip more hospitable.
