Personally, I think that the time for war is when things cannot be avoided or settled peacefully. I don’t necessarily think it’s morally right, but it is the lesser of two evils and can sometimes ameliorate a problem (though not through the most ideal of circumstances). When a country is faced with an attack similar to the one on September 11, 2001, there is no other alternative than to retaliate and protect the country as a whole, therefore it becomes the country’s responsibility to stick up for itself and go to war, but if there is a small argument over land or a misunderstanding, the best thing to do would be to try and settle it peacefully. When referring to alternatives, I think it depends on the situation. If there is one like 9/11, then there is no alternative; but, as previously mentioned, there is a small and unimportant one (where the only motive to go into war would be to take another country’s land or power as opposed to protecting our own) then the alternatives would be more peaceful such as a debate or treaty.
